The automotive rumor mill is working full force as talks of a possible Toyota and BMW partnership are gaining speed. According to an Automotive News article, the venture would be for the purpose of BMW diesel powerplants finding duty in Toyota vehicles while hybrid technology from the Japanese builder would be given to the German company. The report came about after two newspapers, German’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Japan’s Nikkei, said an announcement might be made at the upcoming Tokyo Auto Show.

A main driving force behind the potential partnership is cost cutting. Toyota would be able to save by having its domestic and Polish assembly plants make fewer diesel engines. BMW, who is starting to build its hybrid portfolio, could expand even further with help from the hybrid experts at Toyota. Even though the idea is sound, both automakers have yet to divulge any official details. In fact, a BMW representative called the stories “speculation” and denied any other information to Automotive News. To get the true answer, we will simply have to wait and see.
