For the upcoming 2012 model year, the just right sized BMW 5-Series line up will feature engines that have all been turbocharged. With the news that the next M5 super sedan will run a twin turbo V8, that would only leave the base 528 left as it currently uses a naturally aspirated straight six. That is until the next model year as BMW has revealed that a new turbocharged inline four cylinder will find its way under the hood of the next base 5-Series.

Carrying the moniker N20, the new engine displaces 2.0 liter and produces 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque via a turbocharger, direct injection and BMW’s VANOS valve timing. That 240 horsepower is the same figure as the old six cylinder and the new engine’s torque rating is 30 lb-ft greater. Transmission choices will be limited at first to the new ZF eight speed automatic and all wheel drive (528i xDrive) will be an option.
