It is Friday: a day to let your mind wander and dream of things of a radical nature. It is on this Friday that Forum Friday will attempt to benefit your dreams by revealing some rather interesting engine swaps that have taken place inside the automotive world.

The thread that put a start to this train of thought is a discussion of a Ford Mustang that packs the punch of an Aston Martin V12 under its muscular hood. The english 5.9 liter narrow angle V12 produces nearly 500 horsepower but that isn’t what makes this particular swap so appealing. The truth is the modular 4.6 liter Ford V8 originally found in this particular Mustang is easily capable of producing the same amount of power, but no V8 could ever match the raw sound that an Aston V12 emits. A blatant automotive bragging right, the V12 Mustang is expensively silly but still very cool.

The V12 engine is most famous for its sound and that might be the reason for it finding its way into other cars. Another famous V12 swapped car is the Top Secret Toyota Supra V12. Using the Japan-only 5.0 liter Toyota V12 from the Crown limo, this twin turbocharged 1,000 horsepower one-off marvel has been clocked at 222 mph.

Easily the most famous V12s to come out of Germany are the BMW built gems. With its smooth power deliver and infamous sound, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to find one under the hood of a late 80’s BMW 3-Series. The second generation E30 3-Series is highly sought after in the tuning world and this twin turbocharged V12 powered model from Germany is the cream of the crop. Powered by the already high output 5.0 liter V12 from the 90s 8-Series, this project car could easily break the 600+ horsepower mark using massive twin turbochargers.

These three vehicles are just a small sampling of the kind of mechanical mastery that exists in the automotive world. The pure lust and sound of the V12 engine can make the gargantuan task of swapping engines almost worth the effort.
