GM Partners With SAIC For EV Technology

By on Friday, September 23rd, 2011

SAIC Motor Corp. Ltd is one of China’s largest vehicle manufactures and carries numerous joint ventures with other top name companies.  On the list is General Motors who will now assist in the development of an all-new electric vehicle platform.  The joint venture, Shanghai GM, will be the home of the electric vehicle which will be built at its Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC).

“The co-development of this new electric vehicle architecture demonstrates the broad range of benefits made possible by the strong partnership between SAIC and GM,” said Tim Lee, president of GM International Operations.  This will not be the first time the two companies have gotten together for an electric vehicle.  Last year, the Sail EV concept was revealed at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai.  The agreement between SAIC and GM as well as the management at PATAC ensures that engineers from all three will put a helping hand on the new project.  Vehicles that result from the partnership will be sold to China first with an eventual global brand.

“Our agreement will enable SAIC and GM to take advantage of economies of scale and get new technology to the market faster than by going it alone,” said Chen Hong, president of SAIC Motor.
