Mazda is trying desperately to keep the rotary engine alive, and last night they unveiled a new concept car that previews the future of their rotary program. It is called the RX-Vision Concept, and it is a long-hooded GT-style sports car with a low slung cabin and tight haunches.

Apart from the fact that it will be powered by a new rotary engine called the Skyactiv-R, Mazda is being very tight lipped about this new car. We know it will be rear-wheel drive, and we know it will be a coupe, but that is it. It could be a hybrid, it could have an automatic, it might be a 2+2 seating arrangement; we don’t really know.

What we do know is that Mazda has not given up on the rotary engine, and that it is working hard to make sure that they can make a rotary that passes all the modern emissions and fuel economy tests. This is what put the final nail in the coffin for the RX-8, so it’s the biggest hurdle for Mazda to overcome.

Obviously we are chasing this story as fast as we can, and we will be sure to update the site if we find out anything major. For now, just click the link below to head over to our full gallery of press shots of this new car.
