Nissan’s AroundView monitor technology is some of the coolest pieces of safety tech I have ever been able to use on a car. Having that virtual top-down view of your car makes parking easier, and it gives you a greater awareness of your surroundings. This is especially true when dealing in places where there is limited visibility, otherwise.

This technology is so amazing, that it is now going to be used for scientific endeavors thanks to a partnership with Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). This partnership sees the two companies work with Top Industries, a robotics manufacturer to have small robotic vessel fitted with the same around view tech used on various Nissan and Infiniti cars.

The exact use of the robots isn’t entirely clear, but we do know that these modified machines are going to he trekking across the deepest oceans of our world using the new camera system to acquire more information and visual data than what was previously possible with more conventional methods.

To give a better idea of what is actually going on, Nissan was kind enough to make us a delightfully informative video.
