VW Announces New Golf Mk VII

By on Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

Since its introduction in 1974 the Golf has been an international phenomenon, and now more than 35 years later, Volkswagen is hoping it can continue the magic with the seventh generation car.

The newest Golf is built on the new MQB architecture that will underpin most of the VW groups small cars. THe car has been increased in length and width by 2.2-inch and .5 inches respectively. The wheelbase has been stretched by 2.3-inches and the whole car sits .8-inches lower. Being both lower and wider, we expect the already great driving nature of the current car to be improved.

VW is touting some impressive weight savings on the new car thanks to an increased use of high and ultra-high strength steels. Total wight loss is 220 lbs. The interior is also receiving some refinements like a large 5-inch touchscreen stereo, with an 8-inch navigation unit being optional.

We have no information on pricing or performance, but with an official introduction due in a few weeks at the Paris Motor Show, we will have much more for you soon.

While you wait, why not check out our high resolution gallery of the new Mk VII Golf.
