99 VW Cabrio replacing factory stereo w/ newer models factory stereo?

I have a 1999 VW Cabrio the radio worked fine but had a few cracks so I bought a factory radio from a 2001 VW Jetta or Golf which looks exactly the same as mine except it is a “monsoon/premium”. I installed the new radio and it does not power on. I replaced all the radio fuses and it still does not power on. I re-installed my old radio and it worked fine. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Can you even use a newer VW factory stereo in an older VW? Do you think it is a problem with the radio that I bought? According to the person I bought it from they said it worked fine before they replaced it with an aftermarket radio 1 year after they bought the car? I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

Hmmp..The best thing I could advice you is to go to the nearest electronic shop near you. It's nice also to go back to your manufacture and ask from there. Hope it helps.
