Chevy Silverado 04, front end noise. Whats the problem?

my friend has a 04'Silverado Z71 4x4,5300 vortec.V8, and when he starts off from a stop theirs a thud noise from the front wheel area. I strongly do not think its the motor,so dont say so, you can also hear it when you go over pot holes. What could the problem be or what do i need looked at??? Thanks for any help.

check your ball joint, and your tight rod ends
to check that jack your car up and move your tire left to right to check your rods
and to check your ball joint up and down there should not be no play

sure sounds like a front axle u joint ,,,, but look also for a loose or broken shock / mount ......Daryl
