do i need a a/c compresser to drive my car.. chevy cav 1995?

just bought a used car the next day hurd a rattling noise coming from the area of the altinator took to mechanic and said i need a compressor to drive the car do i

does the noise go away if you shut off the a/c(and not have it on defrost).then i would just unplug the wire at te compressor.
if the noise is all the time,i'm not sure you can bypass with a smaller belt. you may have to get a compessor. check at advace auto parts,they might pull it up on their computor and give you some options

you do not need an a/c compressor to drive your car. some people bypass the a/c compressor to get more power and to save on gas. the sole purpose of the a/c compressor is to provide air conditioning...in the winter it is not needed is it???
