Geo Metro 3-cyl car troubleshoot.....HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

I took my '96 Geo Metro for SMog check, and the tech gave me a
problem code, which points toward the central control module (whatever that is.) I checked the part at Auto Zone and Pep Boys,
$69.99-$79.00 price. I'm a teen barely starting college, and I'm extremely short on cash. Should I replace the central control module on the car, or ignore it? What happens if i don't replace it? And can I do the work myself? Any suggestions to a rookie is well appreciated.
Also, when I make sharp turns, this loud knocking sounds off from either the motor or somewhere in the steering-linkage system. What is it? Can I do something about it?
(I was told it was the boots of the front wheels, which I certainly don't have a clue what it is).

The best thing to do this is to ask more cheaper price than what the actual price was. Or try first to consult to other shops maybe they have lower price that what the first shop has.
