Is it a bad idea to step down the Octane gas level for my 96 Lexus Es 300?

I've been using midgrade for the past 2 years. I always use chevron or shell to fill up, I've been under the impression that this would benefit my car in the long run, but is it even nessessary? Would it be okay to step down from midgrade gas to just regular?

You can use the lowest octane number that will not cause knocking and pinging (sounds that are very distinctive, and you'll know when it happens).

Two of my sis-in-laws drive the LS400 class, and both use higher octanes, but I can't convince them to try lower octanes.

What does it say in your owner's manual? If Toyota is recommending higher octanes, then you might have to keep with the higher octanes for warranty purposes.

It depends. What does your car require? Look in the manual and find out what lexus reccomends. Anything above the cars requirements is a waste of money.

It should be fine. I'd spend the money you save on gas and purchase better oil, like a synthetic, because that will help your car in the long run.
