Location of thermostat in a 1985 VW GOLF? Anybody know?

Where exactly in the engine is it located?
Gordon and Dreamer, we've checked both places and its not in either??

normally, the thermostat is attached to the cooling water hose, between the radiator and the engine block.....(it has a housing)....

follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine, the thermostat will be where the hose connects to the engine.
