I have a '02 Subaru Forrester with 71k miles. The engine is making a loud "whirring" when pressing on the gas. If the engine is idling, everything is normal. If driving and I take my foot off the gas, the engine noise returns to normal.
I took it to the dealership and they say the noise is "internal to transmission and front differential". They say it is caused by a worn transmission bearing. They suggest replacing the transmission at a cost of $3700.
1. Does this sound like a transmission issue? It seems odd that a tranmission would go after 71k
2. is this price reasonable? I'm going to bring this for a 2nd opinion but am concerned they will tell me the same thing.
