1997 Land Rover Discovery Alternator Troubles?

I recently inherited a 1997 Land Rover Discovery. It was driven hard and i would love to restore it. My first concern is that the alternator only works sometimes. It has been replaced twice in less than a year. I have a new one for it, but dont want to put it in just for it to be ruined within days. I received it in early january and have only started it and moved it twice(had to be jump started both times) Anyone who has dealt with a similar problem who can suggest a fix would be greatly appreciated!!

Option one is to take it to the so called experts at autozone and have them do a charging system analysis done, thats about the only thing they can do right and it's free. If you have a voltmeter, start the vehicle and put neg on neg on battery and pos to pos and see what you got, should be 13.8 to 14.1.
