On many of the older cars, such as your's,there is one line from the master cylinder to a junction block, and there is usually the brake light switch on that block or near.
It's a hex head with two wires, and can be found in most parts stores.

...working...? Does anyone know, beyond replacing a fuse, any other parts I should be looking at? Someone mentioned a switch near the brake pedal once. Does that sound right? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

If you look on the brake pedal itself under the dash you will see the brake light switch. It is actually attached to the pedal and on most cars a 5 dollar part. I am not sure if parts stores stock it for something that old good luck.
