hi,
just bought my first car (woo!) a 1991 subaru liberty/legacy. With the help of a mate, who works for a car mechanic who specialises in car electronics, i installed two new pioneer speakers in the back. When i went to try and install the head unit we found the unit to be too big (wide) for the recess in the dash (height is perfect) I know i should have actually cared about the size, but i picked the unit up in the boxing day sales for a bargain. its a pioneer DEH2950MP model. its only a little too wide by about half a centimetre on either side, the dashboard not removed. havent removed the dash yet.
My mate is going to ask his boss in about 3 days about what to do, if i have to get it prefessionally installed. just asking incase i can escape the cost if its easy enough.
btw, the stock head unit is an old clarion tape player
cheers
