Do I need a rear bumper on a 1971 datsun 240z to make it street legal?

I recently bought a 1971 datsun. It did not come with a rear bumber. The man I bought it from said he was just going to mud over the bumper area and drive it without one. Is that legal?

although it is NOT illegal to drive w/o a bumper it is highly dangerous, and i would recommend getting one installed, but to answer your question, no it is NOT illegal

I think it depends on what state you live in i have herd of people geting tickets for this here... Lots of rednecks in utah
