dodge durango making funny noise, what could it be?

My 2003 durango is acting funny. When I start it, it will make a popping noise and then it idols rough and makes a knocking noise. The malfunction indicator light comes on and stays on. I plan on taking it in to get it checked out, but I was just wondering if I could get some ideas on what it might be.
The popping noise is coming from the engin and the light just came on. I drove it 2 miles after it came on to get home.

Their is no timing belt.Your check engine light(Is free to have checked)Will tell part of the story.Has the light been on for some time?If so, You might want to seat down when they tell you about the damage you may have caused.Just be prepared.And get as many estimates as you can in writing.Called covering your butt.

does it run? if it doesn't it might be timing belt. is the popping coming from the exhaust or the engine?
