Faith/nonfaith and politics?

How do your religious beliefs or lack of religious beliefs affect your political positions?
How do they correlate?

The basic tenement to my faith is freedom. Freedom to worship or not. Freedom to have a religious belief or not.

I don't think that it would be fair to say that the two do not correlate. Of course they do - it is how you were raised, one way or another, and they spill into each other. I wouldn't say they define my political stance, nor do they influence my opinion on all of my views, but there is definitely a tie between the two. I don't think anyone can question that.

Your personal politics are informed by your values. Your religious or non-religious beliefs influence your values. a person's politics and beliefs
go hand-in-hand.

When it comes to voting, the candidate who shares my values may not be the best qualified, or competent candidate. I try to go with the best man -- even if the best man is a woman. :)
