I have a 78 yamaha xs-1100 shaft drive bike, will I have problems lowering the bike?

I dropped my xs-400 down on the rear for a chopper look (chain drive), bought this 1100 yesturday for 300 (mint condition), was planning on lowering it, either cutting the springs or going with fender struts to make it a hardtail, but my buddy mentioned that I may have problems because it would change the degree of the shaft, I see lots of pics that guys that obviously have, but do I have to do a bunch of custom stuff to be able to, or can I drop it (probobly 6 inches) and be fine, thanks guys
