I have a problem with my 1993 saab 900 automatic.?

I can't put my car into drive when I start. I can only put it into d1 and get the car moving to around 25mph then put it into drive and then it runs fine. It works well in reverse. Is it something I can do myself? if not ,will it be expensive?

Saab automatics were problematic for a number of years. The garage I work at, we usually just change them over to standard if the car is worthy. Sometimes you don't even get a warning sign that they're going to give up.
