I'm trying to understand the cause of a noise when driving my 04 Chrysler Sebring.?

I have a 2004 Chrysler Sebring LXI with a little more than 50,000 miles. For the past few months, it has been making a noise that one person called a front end chuckle but sounds to me more like a clack. The odd thing is that it will sometimes happen intermittently for several minutes while driving and then stop and not make any noise for several minutes. Of course, both times I took it into the shop, it did not make the noise. One mechanic lifted the car up anyhow and looked underneath but could see no problem. Sometimes when it makes the noise, one can also feel it slightly in the steering wheel. What's the cause and is it dangerous?

I am not familiar with the car...we don't have them in Oz i dont think. But if it is front wheel drive, sounds like the cv joints.
