Land Rover Question: Range Rover v. Land Rover (too long). . .?

Did the Land Rover used to be seperate from the Range Rover, or have they always been make-and-model? Many people believe they are different cars. It is very strange that Range Rovers have their name where LR would usually go. I think that in the UK I saw that they are considered different cars.

Also, are they owned by the company Rover, whatever that is?

also, are LRs really that horidly unreliable
