land rover series ii transfer gear box?

I am trying to strip the transfer gear box with the aid of a haynes manual, it says remove the nut and retaining plate that secures the grooved end of the intermediate shaft to the transfer box casing, I think that I have done that but not sure. It then says use a tyre lever to pull the the intermediate shaft out. The book does not show any photos but I think I have got the right bit and I have moved up to a 2' 6" lever which does not do a thing. the bit I am trying to move has not budged 1 bit.
