The check engine light just came on, but the battery guage says it is still getting a charge. Is it possible the alternator could be bad enough to set off the check engine light but still charge the battery

Normally the check engine light is not part of the charging circuit. Could there be a broken belt that runs other items such as the water pump. It all depends on how things are wired and how many belts are used on what models. The 2003 should have one serpentine belt that runs everything. If it is truly the alternator that is squeling and not a slipping belt, get it replaced before it freezes up and leaves you stranded.

Sounds like a bearing has gone to me, easy enough to check grasp the pulley and see if there is any excessive movement there shouldnt be any really. you can strip and rebuild the alternator yourself the bearing should be available, but save yourself blood sweat and tears and go get another from a dismantlers or a reconditioned one from your dealers (take old alternator with you)
