When the check engine light comes on it can mean just about anything from a fuse to a bigger problem what ever you do dont ignore it. Take it to a service station and they will be able to hook it up to a computer that will tell them exactly what the problem is and in order for you not to get riped off asked them to show you the computer results and if they have to change anything in the car tell them you want to keep the old piece that they replace.
