overheats when stopping? I understand that this is most likely caused by the fan not working. I'm wondering if this could be the only problem, how to test the fan(guessing it's just the fan motor), and if there is anything else I should look for.

Brian has it right. First thing check the fuse, then the relay and then remove wire connector and put power to the fan motor to see if it will run.If it runs then it is the temp. sensor.Replace sensor.

You need to make sure the fan(s) are working and check everything on the cooling system. If you are not able to do this I would take it to a reputable repair facility and have a professional do this before you/she ruins the engine.

Also try the thermostat. To test the fan turn on the AC when the AC is turned on it overrides the fan and kicks it on. If the fan works then check its temp sensor. If the fan does not work then replace the fan.
