Having considered the Smart car and the old Nissan Micra, I'm now being tempted by the Fiat Panda.... any views on its chippyness in town and ability to get me around roundabouts safely ?

For looks, I would go for the Fiat.
For reliability, definitely the Micra. No other car apparently has beaten the Micra in reliability in the last 10 years.
But the choice is yours, obviously.

I f you decide on the panda always wear your seat belt. That's the car my son crashed in a coupe of weeks ago his mate went through the screen and lost his eye. Toughened windscreen contributed to his demise. later cars have laminated glass, much safer.
