I have a 2000 Subaru Outback with an automatic trany. The car has suddenly developed an intermittent starter problem ever since the temperatures here in CT have dropped to winter levels. Most cold morning it takes 3 to 4 tries to get the starter to turn over. The first three tries the starter will make a clanking sound as if the starter gear is engaging, but it will not turn over the engine. On the 4th or 5th try the starter will engage and turn the engine over till it starts. There are no problems with the electrical system and once the car starts there are no issues.
Is this a common problem for some Subaru Outback’s or is my starter on the way out?
