Vauxhall (Opel) Idle Control Valve Question?

I own a 2002 Corsa Comfort 16v 1.2. Over the last few days, whenever I slow down at junctions, lights, etc. the engine has been cutting out. If I keep the car in gear this doesn't happen. The engine maintenance light has also been on solidly. From what I've been reading, it sounds like it's idle control valve which is causing the problem. Although any other thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm awaiting delivery of a code reader to make sure but in the meantime, I due to be making a trip from Glasgow to Manchester.

So, my question is, do I risk doing any damage to engine by making a fairly long trip like this?

Crank shaft pick up sensor. Notorious fault on vauxhalls.

Take it to a garage with decent diagnostics. These cheap ones can and do give incorrect fault diagnosis costing you more in the long run.

Hi

If it is the idle control valve then no you won't cause any damage to the engine by embarking on your trip.

If the EGR valve is stuck open then there is a very good chance that the engine will be overfuelling, and if the overfuelling is sufficient enough to turn the plugs black then it is sufficient to wash precious lubricating oil from the cylinder walls and cause engine wear.

If the engine is running okay and doesn't misfire and isn't down on power then go with the idle control valve to start with.

If, however, there are running issues as well as cutting out issues then you need to have them rectified before hitting the motorway. Is there any smoke whilst driving? Is there a lack of power or a misfire, or maybe a hang back before acceleration?

ECOTEC engines are famous for cam sensor failure, and on a more serious note, head gasket failure.

Very best regards

I doubt that the idle control valve is the problem.
I would be looking at the EGR valve and checking all the vacuum pipes and inlet manifold gasket leak.
As for a long trip I doubt it's serious, but make sure your recovery is valid just in case.
