What does mercury and mars look like with the naked eye?

I know that i just looked at one of them in the night sky shortly after 3am 12/18/07 in Ohio. I just do not know which one. I am looking for a description please. What I saw was bigger and brighter then a star and kinda twinkled red around the rim. It was also very high in the sky. Any ideas?

I've never seen Mercury,but i've seen Mars tons of times here in the UK.
It's just like a red-ish star,and a little bigger than a star.
Venus is sometimes visable to the naked eye too.
