...present day Mini Cooper (BMW Mini)? I am trying to understand the relationship between the Cooper car company and the present day Mini Cooper as built by BMW. As I understand the history, the Cooper Car company was a family business and they built race cars. Did this company ever make a car that resembles the present day BMW Mini? If I follow along correctly, one of the founders of Cooper approached the Mini company and said, "let's make a car." This car was similar in style to the other models made by mini, but this was called the "Cooper." This a Mini (brand) Cooper (model). Why didn't the Cooper company just make this car? Since then, BMW has bought up the rights to this name, correct? Is it more like how Ford makes an Escort, or is it more like a Shelby Mustang, a Ford car modded by a guy named Shelby, for example? What is the lineage and the business evolution to the present day "Mini Cooper" that you buy at a BMW dealer starting from John Cooper?

BMW owns mini cooper. So its like ford owning Mercury. Or GMC owning Cheverlot. Its not a partner company like Honda and Acura or Audi and VW.
