what type of motor oil should i put in my 1995 volkswagen golf?

I just bought this car from my friend for 1000 bucks. he said 5w 30, but the oil light keeeps coming on, but there is oil in the car. is it possible that its too light of oil and cant get oil pressure?

Most of your normal cars need 10w 30. But if your car is prone to oil leaks you would need a thicker oil like 20w 50.
