What type of motor oil should i put in my 1995 volkswagen golf?

I just bought this car from my friend for 1000 bucks. he said 5w 30, but the oil light keeeps coming on, but there is oil in the car. is it possible that its too light of oil and cant get oil pressure? the car runs great its a really smooth ride, you almost cant even hear the engine (no ticks no nothin). and it has 156,351 k miles

The oil light comes on when your oil pressue is low, so you may have a bad oil pump.

Perhaps that's why the car was only 1k.
