I know what a fiat currency is - what I want to know is if there are any possible explanations aside from Federal Reserve usury.

Because its economy is considered the strongest and most stable in the world and as such needs no physical assets to back up its value other than the promise of its government. To take it a step further, the dollar is the vehicle currency in which the vast majority of international trade is transacted, so it isn't just what its citizens believe, its what the entire world holds true.
