In 2006, Ford Motor Company released a car that easily helped them stay afloat during a rather troublesome period for the Big Three. In just five years, more than one million midsize sedans have been sold with yearly sales increasing with each calender change. As 2011 nears its end, the Fusion did something rather remarkable: it became Ford’s best-selling car. The blue oval expects the year-end figure to hit 240,000 which also makes 2011 the largest profit-making year for the Fusion. Lead by the 40 plus mpg hybrid version, the midsize car line has become a serious contender that is looking to get even more so with the next generation right around the corner.

“Since launching in the 2006 model year, Fusion has reinforced Ford’s commitment to the midsize sedan market,” said Samantha Hoyt, Fusion marketing manager. “Recognized as a Best Buy every year since launch, Fusion is a key contributor to Ford’s car renaissance.” When this year is up, it will not be the first time the Fusion has over took the 200,000 sales mark. The car managed the accomplishment in 2010 when the Hybrid was released. Last year also earned the car Motor Trend’s Car of The Year award as the North American Car of The Year trophy. Ford hopes to continue the Fusion’s success with the next iteration which will be revealed next month at the North American International Auto Show. It should hit production as a 2013.
