One of, if not the, most historically influential sports cars to come out of Japan will continue its heroic existence for the 2013 model year with a revised face and subtle new features. Scheduled to hit Nissan dealership floors next June is the next line up of 370Z cars but before that date arrives, the automaker will tempt autocross racers and mountain carvers around the world at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. “Since the original 1970 Z was first introduced our goal has always been to keep the design moving forward. The changes for 2013, though subtle, go a long way in enhancing its dynamic appearance inside and out,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager for the Nissan Division of Nissan North America.
Changes to the rear drive icon are by no means radical or extensive, but just enough to keep the car running fresh. The front end features a new bumper cover and more vertical head lamps with LED running lights. With a wider ‘mouth’ and sloped hood, the 2013 Z manages to look even more similar to the original car from the 1970s. New wheels can be found inside the wide fenders; both the base 18 inchers and Sport Package equipped and turbine like 19 inch units. Red accents can be found along the outside such as on the brake calipers and rear reflector. Two new exterior colors will be offered – Magma Red and Midnight Blue. On Sport Package cars, the dampers carry a different tune compared to the 2012 car to offer even sharper handling.
Mechanically, the 2013 Z will be the same as the current car with a few configuration changes. The same and fantastic 3.7 liter VQ37 V6 will put 332 horsepower to the rear wheels via either the six speed manual or seven speed automatic. For 2013, the Roadster will only be offered with a clutch pedal in Touring trim. All three styles of 370Z will be available: the Coupe, Roadster and NISMO. With the later, a tuned and aerodynamically effective exterior will match a higher output engine and stiffer suspension. Using a free-flowing exhaust and retuned ECU, the NISMO will put out a stout 350 horsepower, 276 lb-ft of torque and will be offered only to people who opt for do-it-yourself shifting.
