Many say that the space race was the pinnacle of American ingenuity and that we couldn’t return to the moon again if we wanted to. Google clearly didn’t get that memo when they issued a challenge to put another vehicle on the moon by 2017. Audi is taking that challenge head on, currently testing an ultra-light AWD modern day lunar rover. They’ve only got one shot at getting the “Lunar Quattro” right and don’t appear to be taking any chances, only time will tell if it can withstand the lack of atmosphere and extremely varying temperatures on the moon. Continuous testing in some of the world’s harshest climates will help refine the Quattro in a way that only Audi can achieve. It’s the German way after all right?

As an avid enthusiast of all things motorized, I can’t be any more thrilled than I already am to watch this take place. Never did I think that we’d be sending projects to the moon again. Even if it’s only the Lunar Quattro, it gives me hope that my childhood dream of walking on the moon isn’t dead. The phrase “it’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” couldn’t ring any truer today.
