During the twelve months of 2011, Ford Motor Company sold 127,683 vehicles fitted with EcoBoost engines. When 2012 is over, the American automaker is hoping to triple that number by offering even more turbocharged powerplants in a variety of cars and trucks. Various models will get all-new boosted powerplants this year and by the end of it, there should be nine vehicles with the ability to achieve 40 mpg or better on the highway. Given that the best-selling Ford of all time recently saw higher six cylinder sales compared to V8s, the turbocharged engines could easily help the company achieve their goal.

“EcoBoost expansion and availability in high-volume nameplates such as the all-new Ford Escape and Fusion will take this affordable, fuel-saving technology to the heart of the market,” said Ford Group Vice President of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering Sue Cischke. “Ford is committed to delivering class-leading fuel economy for our customers, which benefits the environment and helps the U.S. move toward greater energy independence.” The latest U.S. EcoBoost offering will be the 1.6 liter inline four cylinder that will be found under the hood of both the all-new 2013 Escape and Fusion. The full-size Taurus will follow suit as the Explorer’s 2.0 liter, 237 horsepower turbocharged four cylinder will take over as base power plant duty. Efficiency doesn’t have to be the only EcoBoost trait as the Focus ST and Police Interceptor will turbocharge their tires into smoke and blaze both the street and track.
