We’re entering a new epoch in automotive safety, and there are a lot of really cool things automakers are doing to make us safer than we ever have been in a car. Remember what a big deal airbags were when they were first introduced? They completely changed the way car crashes occurred, and the end result was more people still alive. Before that it was the seatbelt—and yes, believe it or not, there was a time when these were unheard of in moving vehicles—and it had similar results. Today, if a car doesn’t have seatbelts and airbags, you can’t legally drive it on the road. That’s how important they’ve become. Well, now every new car dealer has to offer is ready to introduce you to a whole new family of safety features that make airbags and seatbelts look elementary. We’re talking about how Blu-Ray looks compared to a Beta cassette. That’s how big a difference. The first big innovation is the Pre-Collision stuff car companies are adding to their vehicles. Using radar, automobiles are not only able to maintain a safe following distance while the cruise control is on, but if a crash is imminent, the radar can sense where the possibly damaging structure is in relation to your car and help steer the vehicle away from it. That’s right—this is a car smart enough to help you avoid the nastiest of impacts in a horrible crash. And you thought the cars that parallel parked for you were cool. Other features include headlamps that actually shift towards the direction you’re turning, advanced braking systems, and of course all the top-of-the-line supplemental stuff like airbags and front and rear crumple zones. It’s the sort of thing you can get in a brand new Lexus, but might not be able to find at a used car dealer. Lexus dealerships, however, can offer a number of different cars that have the above-listed safety features and much more. Just because we’ve got belts and airbags doesn’t mean we should stop trying to improve automotive safety. Cars still kill a bunch of people every year, so the safer we can be while in one, the better.
