98 windstar that won't idle

my 98 windstar won't idle properly, it wants to rev up to 2500 rpm then drop down to 500 rpm or even stall right out. If you put it in drive with your foot on the break the motor want to take off and jump out from under the hood? What is this problem and how can I fix the problem? Thanks Steve

Hmm, sounds like time for a new clutch...If you are letting go in first gear, at a stop, and slowly, it might not die. I thought they did, but if you slowly let off in first from a stop, the car will start to roll forward, and maintain an idle. Otherwise, it does sound like your clutch is slipping.....which shouldn't have anything to do with the water pump.
