im looking to buy a new car and i like the grand am's and the grand prix's. i have a 96 mercury sable right now and it is slow as hell. i heard that the pontiacs have some good pickup to them. can anybody give me some opinions on the grand am and grand prix. and i also heard that they break alot.
Are Pontiac Grand Am's good cars?

I have a 2002 Grand Prix and its really fast. I prefer Grand prix's over Grand Am's. Grand Prix's are bigger and more reliable. There are a few problems that go on in a Grand Prix like the power windows going up and down slowly and the heater switch only working on certain settings. Like mine only works on 3,4,5 and 1,2 doesnt work. and my passenger side window goes up slowly but other than those simple things. It's a great car and if you keep up the maintenance then it will last well over 200,000 miles.

Grand Ams are pretty good. My cousin owned one for three years before trading it in for a truck, and except for maintenance (oil changes, tire rotation, etc.), it hadn't been in the shop once. Of course, without any regular maintenance, any car will break down, and you probable heard that rumor from a guy who didn't take care of it. Personally, I prefer Trans Ams to Grand Ams, but if you need a new car, the Grand Am isn't a bad choice at all.
I'm sure you have heard they break a lot. I get that all the time from people who, for whatever reason, feel the need to bash the domestic manufacturers. Most of what they say is pure crap.
I have personally owned a 2002 Grand Am GT and put 68,000 miles on it before trading it in. It gave me only one problem - the pass key system wouldn't let my car start one dreary December afternoon. That issue never happened again, although I hear it can be a common problem on damp days.
The Grand Prix is a great car as well. I would look for one with the 3800 engine, as they get fantastic mileage on the highway and are virtually indestructable. One of the best powertrains in automotive history, I think!
