Uhhhh... the belt is a toothed belt. There is NO timing at all. You line up the timing points on the crankshaft and camshaft (there is a mark on the block near each and a corresponding mark on each shaft which line up with each other), loop the belt over the teeth on each shaft and then apply tension with the tensioner. Timing gears, timing chain, timing belt, they all work exactly the same way, linking the crankshaft to the camshaft.
