Land Rover Litre Engine Using Oil?

I have a 1997 3.9 V8 Landrover with only sixty thousand genuine miles on the clock. It uses about a litre of oil every 2000 miles. There are no leaks and no sign of oil in the water. Is this normal for these engines?

this vehicle and some Rover salons were featured on Watchdog, a consumer programme on BBC.
I think you have a blown head gasket. They put steel head gaskets onto aluminium engine blocks, and would not admit the fault

On the one hand, there's probably a sealing problem somewhere, OTOH a quart between changes is not the worst thing that could happen.
