Need help with a Toyota valve adjustment.?

I have a 1986 Toyota Camry with 172,000 miles on it. It has been a great work car for the past 2 years. But about 3 months ago, I noticed that I was getting some valve chatter under load going up hills or accelerating hard. So I bought the Hayes manual for the car and read that the valvetrain needs to be adjusted very 30,000 miles. I have no idea of how the previous owners maintained the car, but I would guess that it has never been done. The manual describes setting the #1 cylinder to TDC and tightening the rocker arm to a set torque and then doing the same when the #4 cylinder is at TDC as well. My question is, how do I set the #1 at TDC and the #4 at TDC? It seems a little midevil to put my finger over the plughole , but if I knock the engine over until the rotor is aimed at the specific spark plug, will that work? And if I take off the distributor cap to do this, won't there be sparks and such shooting out of the distibutor? Any advice?
