Should i go ahead and buy a used car?

I have an 88 Nissan stanza that runs good but i've been looking at some newer models of cars. Found a few that were anywhere from $5,000-8,000. i work two jobs and live at my aunt's house while i am in college. She doesnt make me pay rent or anything, so I'm able to save up money. About how much would the monthly payments be? Should i wait? I feel like if i don't buy a newer car that will probably last longer now, I will not get the chance when i am on my own and have to pay rent and all other kinds of bills. any suggestions??
