...but I lost the title....? ......before I could have it officially transferred to my name? I know, I know, it's an idiotic thing to do so spare me your judgement and tell me what I can do.

Have the previous owner obtain an affadavit of lost title. He can have it notarized and release interest in the vehicle to you. It is no big thing.

See if the original owner could get a copy of it from the DMV or something.

The previous owner would have to buy a duplicate from the DMV and then have it transfered to you once again.
