Why does my Fiat Punto shudder sometimes when i go to pull away in first gear?

I can still get the car into gear and it never jumps out of gear or squels and when i drive in higher gears it's fine and it catches the bite and holds it fine... but sometimes (and not all the time) it shudders badly when i go to pull away or if im stuck in traffic and i;m working the clutch to move forward slightly. I wonder if the clutch is going? Does this sound right... or could it be something else?

it could be a bad syncro or a chipped tooth that when you shift at the right revolution it catches right and doesn't pop on the broken tooth... or you could have a shitload of metal shavings in you tranny lol
