Why has the head gasket of my 2 year old BMW 1 series failed?

My BMW series 1, a bit over 2 years old and 24000 miles on the clock, decided to stop starting. Still covered by manufacturer warranty - luckily.
This was after a 250 km journey during which I had no problems, no warning lights showing. I reached the destination OK, and half an hour later it would not start at all. The RAC people plugged in the laptop which said cam shaft sensor failure. At BMW garage, things unfolded rather dramatically with a long list of parts requiring replacement, not the least of all being the head gasket!! They haven't yet told me the cause for this but I am very worried something is really wrong with this car, to develop such a dramatic fault, given the mileage and age. Any help/suggestions - other than to sell it asap, would be much appreciated.

take it back to car dealer and try to get another one from manufacturer, sounds like a factory fault the heads are more than likely the cause , they can shave them heads and it should be fine but you shouldnt have to put up with that if you bought it new, ask manufacturer for another one!! goodluck!
